Abstract

The Thomson effect refers to volumetric heating or cooling in a conductor when a charge current and a temperature gradient are applied in the same direction. Similarly, it is expected that a conductor will be heated or cooled when a charge current, a temperature gradient and a magnetic field are applied in orthogonal directions. This phenomenon, referred to as the transverse Thomson effect, has not been experimentally observed. Here we report the observation of this effect in a semimetallic Bi88Sb12 alloy with thermoelectric imaging. We can switch between heating or cooling by changing the direction of the magnetic field. Our experiments and analyses reveal the essential difference between the conventional and transverse Thomson effects. Whereas the former depends sorely on the temperature derivative of the Seebeck coefficient, the latter depends on the temperature derivative and the magnitude of the Nernst coefficient. The observation of the transverse Thomson effect provides a new concept for active thermal management technologies.

We hadden het hier eerder al over de theorie dat donkere energie mogelijk ontstaat zwarte gaten, die op de één of andere manier gewone materie om kunnen zetten in donkere energie – men leze deze Astroblog van november 2024 daarover. De theorie wordt het cosmologically coupled black hole (CCBH) model genoemd en recent heeft een internationaal team van sterrenkundigen daar verder onderzoek naar gedaan. Wat ze gedaan hebben is het combineren van het model met de gegevens van het Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) in Chili, dat met z’n 5.000 robotogen iedere helder nacht sterrenstelsels fotografeert en zo de expansie van het heelal nauwkeurig in beeld brengt (de afbeelding bovenaan geeft een impressie van de miljoenen stelsels die tot nu toe in kaart zijn gebracht). Hoeveel zwarte gaten er zijn – en daarmee hoeveel donkere energie ze produceren – hangt nauw samen met de snelheid van stervorming in sterrenstelsels, want zwarte gaten zijn de eindproducten van zware sterren.

Nieuw wiskundig model van het heelal kán de Hubble-spanning oplossen

Recent is Leonardo Giani (Universiteit van Queensland) samen met enkele collega’s met een nieuw wiskundig model van het heelal gekomen en ze zeggen dat daarmee zowel de Hubble-spanning als de σ8-spanning kúnnen worden opgelost, de twee grote kosmologische vraagstukken die er momenteel zijn. Feitelijk gaat het om het bestaande ΛCDM-model van het heelal, maar de zes parameters daarvan breiden ze uit met twee nieuwe parameters. In het nieuwe model hebben ze ook samenballende materie en uitdijende leegten (Engels: voids) meegenomen en om die goed te beschrijven hebben ze twee parameters geïntroduceerd: R_v als de minimale grootte die een leegte moet hebben om de metingen te beïnvloeden en R_c als de minimale grootte die een cluster van materie daarvoor moet hebben. Met die metingen bedoelen ze de waarnemingen gedaan aan het heelal en daarvoor gebruiken ze o.a. de metingen gedaan met het Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), dat sterrenstelsels tot 11 miljard jaar terug in de tijd heeft bestudeerd. In de grafiek hierboven de uitkomsten van berekeningen op basis van het nieuwe model en in het groene vierkant zijn de waarden voor R_v en R_c waarbij de kosmologische spanningen niet meer bestaan. Het model laat zien dat donkere energie steeds zwakker wordt, hetgeen ook al uit eerdere metingen (o.a. DESI en de SPT)  naar voren is gekomen.
